The crew

Five voices, one chorus

We're five kids from an alpine valley. We live in a barn we've turned into a rehearsal room and studio. The youngest is 7, the oldest 12. We play what grandfathers, aunts and cousins taught us — and a few things we made up ourselves.

Magnus

Voce, banjo

Seven years old, straw-coloured hair, banjo taller than him. Starts every song with a polite cough.

Magnus learnt to sing before he could speak. Grandpa Pietro put the banjo in his hands, telling him that 'the strings are short but the voice carries down the valley'. He opens every concert, and he is the one asking for the encore.

Luce

Violino

Nine years old, two braids, a sky-blue fiddle. When she plays she closes her eyes and forgets the crowd.

Luce learnt the violin from Aunt Rosa, who played at village fairs. Her harmonies are the golden thread tying every song together — always a half-tone above Magnus, never a tenth out of tune.

Pietro

Fisarmonica, voce

Twelve years old, already a beard he doesn't shave. The accordion is the same one his great-grandfather played.

Pietro is the oldest (by one year). His accordion has rung at every village wedding since 1948. When he kicks off 'Pietra & Ferro' the barn shakes and the glasses chime.

Anita

Chitarra acustica

Eight years old, two bass notes that make the barn beams shiver.

Anita has three fingers a touch longer than normal and zero stage fright. She learnt the chords secretly watching her mother's hands, and was the first to say: "this one we call Reborn to Fly".

Gio

Percussioni, washboard

Ten years old, always smiling. Plays anything that makes a sound — even the kitchen pans.

Gio is the rhythmic engine of the band. His main instrument is an old laundry washboard found in the cellar, but he also uses spoons, hiking boots and an empty pumpkin. Never a beat dropped.

“The strings are short, but the voice carries down to the valley.”
